Eurypterus remipes |
Eurypterids were the largest arthropods to ever swim the
oceans. Their closest living relatives are the arachnids (spiders, scorpions, horseshoe
crabs). They lived from the Ordovician to the Permian, where they became
extinct during the Permian extinction. These large swimming arthropods were
composed of a segmented body that connects to their head. Their body was
typically rounded and flat. They had several legs, and two of them, called
paddles, were used for swimming and navigation. Also, they had a sectioned,
tapering tail. Their lengths ranged from one to eight feet in length, depending
on species.
